The B.I.G. Food Trends of 2018

Like us, you’ve probably been a part of many food trends that have come and gone over the years. Witnessing a food trend affect us on a global scale is quite a spectacular phenomenon, bringing us closer in spite of our differences. 2018 will be no different. We’ve put together our forecast for trends that will continue to make a B.I.G. impact on what we choose to consume in our daily lives.

1. You’ve Gut A Friend In Me

If you love cooking, there’s a chance you have tried your hand at some form of food fermentation such as preparing a fruit or vegetable pickle, fermenting black tea to make kombucha, salting lemons to make preserve, or making a fresh batch of yogurt. Fermenting foods is an age-old practice that began way before scientific journals began listing their many health benefits. These foods are abundant with probiotics (good bacteria) and contain microflora that work to provide a protective lining in your gut and intestines. They also help shield your body from potentially harmful pathogens such as E.coli bacteria and Candida.

It’s no surprise that words such as ‘kimchi’ and ‘tempeh’ have become household names for those seeking to improve their health through their diet. What’s more, these foods debunk the myth that ‘healthy food tastes bad’ – because they taste really good! Pick up a jar of Natural Greek Yogurt or a bottle of Beast Bucha from our shelves to see what we mean. With all their merit, we’d be gutted if fermented foods don’t make their way into more kitchens and cafes this year.

2. A Poke In The Right Direction

Do poke bowls sound familiar to you? If they don’t, there’s no relation to Pokemon here – poke bowlsoriginate from Hawaii where they are considered a staple food. The word ‘poke’ means “to slice” in Hawaiian and commonly refers to succulent cuts of raw fish that are served with rice, topped with fresh vegetables and dressing. Practical, economical and versatile, this delicacy is quickly gaining commercial value amongst foodies who enjoy dreaming up their own versions using preferred ingredients. Poke bowlsare now a hot topic on social media platforms, so we wouldn’t be surprised if a poke shop pops up in your vicinity this 2018.

3. Plant The Seed Of Health

Veganism is steadily getting more popular due to Hollywood celebs giving diet advice on Youtube, unending social efforts from animal rights activists, and most notably the plethora of health benefits they have to offer. Practitioners of this plant-based diet have reported increased energy levels, vibrant skin, and an overall improvement in their quality of life. For most of us it would require a radical shift in eating habits to be vegan, but it may be exactly what you need – vegan foods are low in saturated fats, high in fibre and protein, packed with antioxidants and rich in essential vitamins and minerals such as iron and calcium.

There are many vegan products that are already prominent in the average shopping trolley. Products like almond milk, coconut milk, cashew cheese, chia seeds, vegan noodles (udon, ramen, soba, etc.) and natural sweeteners such as maple syrup are among the many products flying off grocery shelves. We say grab a bag of sweet potato chips, sit back, and watch as veganism takes the reigns in 2018.

4. An Offer You Co-conut Refuse

Coconut oil is undeniably one of the healthiest foods on the planet with many practical uses we can incorporate into our daily lives. The oil is harvested from the flesh of matured coconuts and is most commonly used as a moisturiser, a cleansing hair oil, and as a daily supplement taken every morning for its nutrients and healthy fats. This year, we think it’s time to go nuts about using coconut oil in your cooking! The high smoke point and long shelf life make it a valuable addition to your larder. Use it for frying, greasing your baking pans, and as a replacement for butter in cooked and baked goods.

5. Quali-tea Over Quanti-tea

Green tea and oolong tea have long held their own against the omnipresent black tea as the drink of choice for tea-lovers. But lately herbal teas seem to have moved into the limelight as well. Herbal teas are made from dried fruits, flowers, spices, or herbs, giving them a wide range of flavours to suit different palates in addition to offering multiple health benefits. For instance, a delicious cup of chamomile tea will help you get a better night’s sleep while providing antibacterial and liver-protecting properties. Ginger tea is well known for being an effective remedy for nausea as well as an anti-inflammatory agent. Whatever your flavour may be, tea is rapidly becoming a go-to cuppa and has sparked the fruition of tea bars and cafes in several countries.

As we forecast what’s in store this 2018, you can be sure our shelves are well stocked with as many trendy treats as we can get our hands on.
