No doubt you’ve heard of Binging With Babish, and if you haven’t, you need to. He’s built a career out of going the extra mile to make food from TV and movies an edible reality. While a lot of iconic TV meals can stray into the wild side of things, there are a lot more that are super simple to get on your plate. Here are four of our faves:
Season 4 of Stranger Things is confirmed, which means Eleven and her love for all things Eggo are back. We don’t recommend walking into a supermarket, grabbing a handful of Eggo boxes and walking right out again, but we do recommend you try making a Triple-decker Eggo Extravaganza (Hopper was on to a good thing). Stack 3 toasted Eggos with a layer of whipped cream and mini Hershey’s Kisses between each one, then scatter on a smattering of Reese’s Pieces, jelly beans and your favourite gummy sweets – we’re partial to Jelly Snakes ourselves. Although Hopper uses this super stacker treat to get El out of bed, we don’t suggest you make Triple-deckers a breakfast routine.
If waking up to a sugar rush isn’t your style, try some Adventure Time bacon pancakes, courtesy of Jake the Dog. It’s an easy concept to grok (understand): You take some bacon and you put it in a pancake. The trick is in the execution. You could get some pancake batter and stir bacon bits into it before cooking, or you could do what Babish does and stick bacon into the half-cooked pancake before flipping it. You could even try frying the bacon first, then cook the pancakes in the bacon grease after! If it doesn’t turn out how you want on the first try, remember Jake’s wise words: “Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something.”
When it comes to TV cheesecakes, only one can claim to be criminally good. With it’s buttery, crumbly graham cracker crust, and rich yet light cream cheese filling, the cheesecake from Mama’s Little Bakery drives both Rachel and Chandler to swiping cake boxes off their neighbour’s doorstep. Poor Mrs. Braverman doesn’t know what she’s missing out on. Luckily, you don’t have to. No bake cheesecakes have been around for a while, and all you really need is graham crackers, cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, butter and sugar. Of course, you could always just come get a slice at Crumbs.
Who could say no to a delicious bowl of ramen, topped with spring onions, boiled egg and bamboo shoots? Definitely not Naruto! Named after narutomaki, the swirly pink and white fishcakes often found floating in ramen, Naruto is as much defined by his love for ramen as he is by his desire to be Hokage. There’s no need to make a pilgrimage to Ichiraku to enjoy the perfect bowl of ramen, you can make your own right at home. Check out our ramen blog post right here for some of our favourite take-home ramen, then get creative! You can mix in leftover protein, like chicken or tofu, add some sriracha sauce for a bit of heat, or stir some miso paste into your broth for a more authentic flavour.
Now that you know the ‘M’ in MTV actually stands for Makan, keep binging on your favourite shows and your favourite show foods. Don’t forget to pick up everything you need for those TV meals at your nearest B.I.G., and we’ll catch you in the next post!
